Crayfish Cave

February 12, 2023

Conditions were calm so we headed out to Thom's Rock to catch some crayfish. As soon as we descended to depth, we attracted the attention of many blue cod. We began to hunt and they all followed right along with us.

I found a couple of crayfish and made a grab for them but no luck. Later in the dive, my dive buddy found a crayfish in a small cave that he wasn't able to reach. I tried to reach inside when a large blue cod from the group showed up. I was completely surprised when the blue cod went into the cave and tried to bite the crayfish! The crayfish just retreated further into the cave out of sight and impossible to catch.

When we eventually ascended to the surface, the conditions had unexpectedly changed for the worse. Again it was the work of the incoming Cyclone Gabrielle. It was a bumpy ride getting back into the boat. Ultimately we didn't go on the second crayfish dive of the day due to the conditions and returned to safe harbour.
