Freedive - Ulva Island Kelp Forest |
March 21, 2026 |
I was on the beautiful Rakiura Stewart Island so I went freediving with Dive Rakiura. The site was a kelp forest just off Ulva Island. I walked the island that morning looking for birds and now I was freediving the island looking for fish.
Dive Rakiura has a boat shed in Golden Bay Wharf, where we launched nearby.

We got to the kelp forest.

Kelp Forest Site
The first thing we saw was a starfish on a stroll.

Starfish
There were a lot of good freedives amongst the kelp.

Freediving
The kelp forest was impressive in its own right.
